Investing in Women for Healthier Futures
Right before International Women’s day, WiLD Norway joined forces with Operation Smile Norway, Laerdal Global Health, and Microsoft for a timely and powerful event focused on gender, funding, and innovation in healthcare. The event brought together over 170 engaged participants from across sectors, and featured keynote speakers including Usman A. Mushtaq, Norwegian State Secretary for Healthcare, and Diwa Samad, Chief of Staff at The World Bank GFF.
We are grateful to Astrid Sundberg for expertly moderating the conversation and to all speakers who shared their knowledge and perspectives. The message throughout the evening was clear: investing in women is not only the right thing to do - it is a strategic, necessary choice for stronger health systems and a better future.
Key Takeaways
Investing in women strengthens entire communities: When women have access to healthcare, leadership, and funding, the benefits extend far beyond individuals—driving innovation, improving outcomes, and strengthening economies.
Norway has a critical role in global health: As highlighted by Usman A. Mushtaq, sustained investment in global health programs is essential. These programs are not just lifesaving—they are system-saving.
Preventative care needs more attention: WiLD Norway’s own Ishita Barua, MD PhD, emphasized the importance of funding accessible, preventative healthcare. These investments are cost-effective and have the potential to save lives and reduce long-term health burdens.
The ripple effect is real: As Morten Nyegaard from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation reminded us, investments in women’s health and reproductive rights have multi-generational impact, touching families, communities, and entire economies.
Change starts with conversation - but it moves forward through action. Let’s keep building momentum.
